Panama Viejo (also called Panama La Vieja) was the first European settlement on the Pacific Coast of both the Americas. It was founded in 1519 by Pedro Arías de Ávila and inhabited until 1672 when the English bucaneer Henry Morgan attacked and destroyed the city. Today there is an interesting museum at the visitor center and the ruins of various churches and monasteries open to visitors. Some are in a very poor condition, others have been carefully restored. The highlight is the tower of the ancient cathedral offering not only views over Panama Viejo but also over modern Panama City.
As Panama Viejo is surrounded by rather poor neighbourhoods don't bring many valuables and be careful, especially around the first few ruins.
Have lunch at the Restaurante Las Ruinas, excellent Panamanian food for 2 -3 $.

This popular restaurant serves authentic Panamanian food in generous portions at very reasonable prices. Centrally located in the El Cangrejo district of Panama City, its country decor and typical dishes make this a great place to get to know Panama. Specially recommended: the hearty breakfasts, Corvina in Garlic Sauce, Hojalra Sandwiches and Tamal de Olla — a delicious baked cornmeal pudding with chicken and vegetables.

The Parque Natural Metropolitano is a National Park just a few minutes outside of Panama City center. In fact, it is the only national park on urban territory in the Americas. Several well-maintained trails invite you to enjoy the exuberant nature and breathe the pure air (the park is also called "Lungs of Panama City"). From the lookout point on top of a hill you can see parts of the Panama Canal, the domestic airport, Panama City and the Bay. Among the animals in the park are many birds, squirrels, coatis, turtles and monkeys. The entrance fee is US$ 1 for locals, US$ 2 for foreigners.
To get to the park you can either grab a taxi or take a bus to the Albrook Terminal and walk for 10 minutes along the street (ask for directions).
